Poetry: “Should Have Known”

Should Have Known           by: Rose Clifford

Should I have known what to do,

As the whisper of first love,

Cracked deafening in my ears?

A young girl I was, a sizable fool,

Warped on the idea of forevers.

I could have known what to do if I only listened,

For I should have washed my hands,

In the pool of your compliments–

Belittling jealously, and finding home in myself.

Maybe today–

You would be more than but a number.
